The Romiley Arms Good Friday Open was won by Chadderton's Paul Heap with a 21-17 final win against Meersbrook's Mick Hobson.

The early ends saw players trade chalks up to 7-7. Heaps then seemed to settle into the form he'd displayed all day and started to build a steady lead and at 17-9 in front looked to have done enough to cruise to the finish. On a 30 yard mark just into the Romiley hollow, Heap played his lead to about a yard off. Hobson promptly beat this with a bowl 18 inches at the side, only for Heap to play his second bowl a foot off. Hobson dug deep and pulled out a superb bowl to finish a front toucher and stop the rot at 10-17. A double at the next end  and the lead was cut to 5 chalks and the mainly Yorkshire watchers sensed the fight back was on. At the next end Hobson played towards the pub ad probably the quickest part of the green and with the jack only two yards from the edge he sent both bowls off to hand the initiative back to his opponent. A single at the next end and the finishing post was in site for Heap as he led the jack at 19-12. A couple of ramblers towards the church and Hobson was back in it with a double to pull back to 14-19. Again he couldn't maintain the fight back and Heap counted one to go to 20-14. He in turn slipped up, with the title in sight and Hobson counted a good two and a single to lead the jack out at 17-20. Some large bets had been placed on Hobson and his supporters got behind him sensing it could be a photo finish, but Heap had other ideas and on a 30 yard mark into the 'easy' corner he beat Hobson's yard short lead which proved enough as Hobson played up and missed with his last bowl. Heap played well all day accounting for another Yorkshireman Dave Hallam in the semi. Hobson had had an even more difficult path to the final beating Warrington's Tony Gatley, homester and recent Woodley qualifier Matt Jones, and last years winner and favorite this time, Dave Jackson in the semi. Club secretary Keith Fantom handed out the prize money with Heap taking home the winners cheque for £150.
